
The Sheldon Memorial Trust is a registered charity, established to perpetuate the memory of Oliver Sheldon.
Oliver Sheldon
A Director of Rowntree and Company Limited, Oliver Sheldon was a scholar and a man of wide culture who made an outstanding contribution to art and culture of the North. He was founder and first Chairman of York Georgian Society, co-founder and first Secretary of York Civic Trust and a prime mover in the establishment of the Borthwick Institute in St Anthony's Hall and the Summer Schools which became the foundations of the University of York.
The Charity’s objects are the promotion and encouragement of education in history and the arts primarily but not exclusively in so far as such subjects are associated with the City of York.
The Charity does not maintain an office and correspondence should be addressed to the Honorary Secretary via our Contacts page.
Essay Prize
Each year a prize is given to the best unpublished essay on an original subject relating to York’s history.
